From the USD website: Compton Accepts Invitation to play in 87th East-West Shrine Game TAMPA, Fla. – University of South Dakota senior offensive lineman, Tom Compton, has accepted an invitation to play in the 87th East-West Shrine Game Saturday, Jan. 21, 2012, at Tropicana Field in St. Petersburg, Fla. The game is scheduled to kick at 3 p.m. CT and will be televised live on the NFL Network.
“I am honored to represent the University of South Dakota at the East-West Shrine Game,” Compton said. “I have tremendous pride for ‘The U’ and this achievement is not only for myself, but for all of Coyote Nation. I could not have been in this position without my former players, coaches, and staff at USD.”
Compton, a native of Rosemount, Minn., completed a stellar career for the Coyotes as he earned first team All-America honors this season starting all 11 games for the Coyotes on the offensive line. Compton earned first team all-conference honors and was named Offensive Lineman of the Year by the Great West Conference Media. He was a PhilSteele.com fourth team All-America selection in 2010.
He also was named to the Great West Conference All-Time Team as 2011 was the last year for football in the Great West Conference. The Coyotes are moving to the Missouri Valley Football Conference in 2012.
Compton anchored an offensive line that helped lead the Coyotes to 6-5 record in 2011, including a thrilling 30-17 win over then-No. 1 and defending national champion Eastern Washington in the DakotaDome Sept. 10. The offensive line paved the way for the Great West’s second-ranked rushing offense (158.2) and the league’s third passing offense (177.6).
He is the only player from the Great West Conference in the East-West Shrine Game and is one of just six players on the West team not from a Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) school. For more information on the East-West Shrine game, please log on to www.shrinegame.com.
In addition, Compton also has been invited to the NFL Combine, Feb. 22-28 in Indianapolis, Ind., in preparation for April’s NFL Draft. Congrats to Tom. Thanks for representing Coyote Nation. Go Yotes!

I didn't get a chance to go to the game or listen to much of it on the radio as I was coaching a game myself, but it sounds like is was at least an exciting game. USD made a game of it. However, USD needs some help from the bench. Teams can't hold the bench scoreless. Somebody needs to be able to step in and give the first 5 a break. They can't nor shouldn't be expected to score all the points if USD expects to compete.
Also, I read the attendance was right around 3300. I guess I can say I expected more people to be there.

Oops forgot about that great track and field program, the one that is better than NDSU, oh wait they aren't. Not even our best program is even the best in it's own conference. Once again coyotefan, comparing to NDSU? On another thread I think you were quoted saying I don't care what NDSU is doing, but here you are again comparing to NDSU. Interesting. Don't get too worked up Iceman. Let's not forget the coyotefan posts simply to boost his post number and we can only assume because his wife is sick of listening to him.

For someone who calls himself coyotefan, you sure seem to find every reason you can to hate on them. Is this season going the way USD had hoped? No. But I'm still supporting them as best I can. I don't think that means I'm settling for mediocrity as you claim the rest of Coyote nation is. I want USD to be successful as much as anyone. Do some things need to change? Yes. Do the players need to step up to be successful in the Summitt? Yes. Does the team still need support from the fans even though they are struggling? YES! Fan support is critical building a successful team. So coyotefan get off your high horse and support your team or find another team to go b!tch about because we are all tired of it.

Another good win for the women last night. Hegge again had a stand out performance that we have come to expect from her. Also a big congratulations to Annie Roche on scoring her 1000th point in a USD uniform. The USD program is REALLY going to miss both she and Hegge next year.

University of South Dakota Director of Athletics, David Sayler, announced Monday that the Coyote football team will play at the University of Montana Sept. 1, 2012, in Missoula, Mont., completing both teams’ 2012 schedules. The Coyotes will receive a cash guarantee for the game next fall and, as a result of scheduling the game, the two schools also have negotiated a home-and-home series in 2013 and 2014. Montana will visit the DakotaDome on Nov. 9, 2013, while the Coyotes will return to Missoula Sept. 13, 2014. All dates are subject to change. ;D Can't wait!

While I don't always understand his personnel decisions and substitution patterns, Boots has been a rock for the program for 20+ years and you can't deny his success - even and maybe especially during the transition. He has had very few teams that weren't competitive. This year is not shaping up to be a typical Boots year. No pride in the D, especially the match-up zone, and no continuity on offense make it tough to watch. That being said, Boots has had more than a few slow starts to seasons and has found a way to turn them around. I agree - this season seems especially daunting - but to say Saylor needs to oust him is a bit premature. To address other posts, I totally miss the hot tub and other festivities that used to take place just like I miss the doubleheaders and back to back's we used to enjoy and I think that is the challenge of the U is to get the fun back to the games. That being said, even in the "good years" there were many dead times in the Dome, especially during break. Let's face it, the new D-1 scheduling is just plain hard to get excited for, both in terms of the unfamiliarity of the teams we're playing and the lack of doubleheaders. And addressing the SDSU transition - yes, it appears they would beat us pretty good, but I don't see many fans in those seats either for typical games. Remember - they are many years ahead of us in transition and this is one of the first decent men's teams they've had. They were flat out horrible for a few years. The lack of double headers is really going to hurt overall attendance in my opinion. USD loses the casual fans who aren't going to drive any significant distance for a single game on a Monday or Thursday night. However, I think over the course of time things will get better. No one likes change which this season and the next few seasons will be hard. Once people become more familiar with the schedule and the new Summitt league opponents, the attendance will improve. It will just take some time. As far as Boots goes, it is too early for fans to start jumping ship in the season. They have a lot of games left. From my coaching experience, all it takes is one defining moment to turn things around. I just hope it happens sooner rather than later.

I had no idea the Yotes even had a game until it was actually over. It seems much harder to keep track of games this year as opposed to last. My one comment on the came is LOUIE LOUIE LOUIE. Good game by Krogman. USD needs his senior leadership going forward if they are going to be successful.

The new guys on the block are never given any respect. You have to earn it. Consider the 10 rank a favor. Exceed expectations and you earn respect. Earning respect will never come easier for you than it will come this season. All you have to do is finish 9 or above. Finish a few places above that and you really earn the wow factor. Agreed. Preseason polls simply give sportswriters and board posters something to talk about until the real season starts anyway.

I didn't get to see the 1st half of the game but did watch the second. Wisconsin is the 7th ranked team in the nation for a reason. They are a tough team. It was good to hear the announcers on the Big Ten network give praise to the USD fans for traveling so well.

Wisconsin will likely score over 50 based on the fact they never seem to take their foot off the offensive gas even when they are up big.

As is the case with most struggling teams, the qb tends to be the scapegoat. Too bad in this case, the pressure from the outside caused this young man to quit doing something he loves when in reality everything wasn't his fault as many fans seem to be claiming. Hopefully, his passion for football will return someday.
