TBH, I'm really unemotional about this - back in August (or just generally after last year) didn't we all expect him to move on after this season? MWC is an enormous step up from SL (I will grant that USU isn't very sought after unless you live there - wherever 'there' is). Am I the only one who is kind of excited about what is next? Smith took on a re-build at USD and was successful - we aren't a re-build anymore. Let's thank him for that, and be happy that both sides got what they wanted out of this relationship. Using Otz as an example, he likely didn't get the USD job because he didn't have that kind of skillset. There is a different skillset that can come in now. Could be a recruiting wizard, X&O guy, etc. I'm pumped to see who Herbster - who isn't surprised by this - has on his short list. Let's get the "who should we hire" thread rolling. Spot on. Lets get the inevitable over with while we have a strong team to help with the coaching transition much like SDSU did with Otz.

So go Yotes 24 why don't you explain to me how Smith was out coached by Otz in Vermillion. Also if the location of the games don't matter than why is it such a disparity in games in Vermillion vs the Jacks vs games in Brookings or Sioux Falls. So is Otz's coaching more responsible for the Jacks winning or is the location of the game more important. It would seems to me based on facts that the location is a little more important. The bottom line is that losing Smith is a big blow. I believe you were wanting an explanation from me: Does the crowd play a factor? Absolutely, everyone loves home court advantage. The game in Vermillion this year was a blowout and at the time I thought we were a better team straight up, but as the season progressed that was simply not the case. State had a poor shooting game in Vermillion and even if they made some more shots I still think we would have won, but SDSC continued to just plow through everyone. Aside from that anomaly, every game between SDSC and USD the past 2 years has been decided by 1 possession or less except the tourney final this year. Last year we beat SDSC by 2 at home, and lost by 1 in Brookings and by 3 in the tourney. This year we lost by 4 in Brookings, and 10 in the tourney on a "neutral" floor. These are not huge disparities outside of the final this year where we lose by 10 and give up 97 points--that is a huge disparity and a direct reflection of the coach (and staff) not having the team ready to play like they typically do. Yes, there was a lot of blue, but still more red than we ever have in Brookings and there is more red in Sioux Falls every year. I can't give all the credit to the crowd, because they just steamrolled us in the final and we didn't take advantage of some breaks they gave us. It's an uphill battle absolutely, but to say that we lose because of the crowd (or refs) is a cop out and I doubt anyone from the team would use that excuse. Trust me, I was just as bitter about the refs last year in that WWF handicapped match, but we were still in position to win in the end and did not do that for reasons I have already detailed. Champions don't use excuses like that, they overcome. As you could see in the post game presser, they all admitted they just didn't do enough to win. My apologies if I've veered too far from the purpose of this thread, but losing Smith would be a big blow, and he is the reason why these rivalry games are meaningful again.

This is getting ridiculous to me. I heard Briar Cliff is looking for a new coach. Better interview for that one as well. His true intentions will be known soon enough but I am getting just a little bit confused on all of this. If this all ends up as rumor only than I apologize but this seems like more than just smoke. USD is an up and coming program so why would he want to go to Utah State. Is he really that desperate to get out of Vermillion. He is really liked here. People may think this is crazy but the Summit Tourney being in Sioux Falls could actually be costing us our coach. I would not blame him at all for thinking that his goals of getting to the tournament have hit a HUGE road block and to get to that goal he needs a more realistic situation to accomplish that. I saw a very frustrated Smith on the side lines in that game in Sioux Falls against SDSU. I actually couldn't blame him because there is a blue and yellow monopoly right now on the tourney. Half the Pac 10 would have lost to the Jacks in that environment. Colorado State OK Utah Fricking State - Good luck with that. I guess the bottom line is that people will do what they want to do. The Coyotes didn't lose that game because of the crowd being a sea of blue, they lost because Smith was out-coached by Otz yet AGAIN! Don't get me wrong- I love the guy, but we have been eliminated from the Summit 2 years in row because he was out-coached by Otz... last year Smith gambled by giving Orris free reign (20 points in the tourney game) in order to limit the 3's from Daum and Co., and he scorched us when it mattered most. Otz knew we'd be throwing bodies at Daum and our loose defense on Orris allowed him to drill that shot that was supposed to fuel us into the tourney this year. Obviously that didn't happen and Otz delivered another grand slam this year. We played terrible defense and couldn't capitalize in the first half when Daum was out and they were still rolling us by a margin of 20 in the first half. Oh, and he drew up another predictable give the ball to Mooney scheme on offense. I understand the coaching carousel is part of mid-major basketball, but Smith is obviously aggressively looking to get out of Vermillion and it is starting to get old listening to all the rumors. I can't fault anyone for trying to get ahead in life and hope he gets what he is looking for. As hard as it is to say, I hope he accepts Utah State and turns them around quickly while playing 4th fiddle behind Weber State, and then gets a gig like Miles at Nebraska. If he is going to leave I'd like it to happen sooner rather than later so we can get another great coach who will have an easy transition with a cupboard full of talent (a la SDSU when Nagy left).

Big question marks on who will still be with the team next year... Mooney could transfer... Smith could be gone... and if he leaves, what will his new recruits do? With the new transfer rules likely coming, everyone could bail. There will no longer be any school loyalty. We might have to come to grips with the idea the cupboard could be bare and we will be starting over again next year... Thoughts? I've always wondered where these transfer rumors come from. Other than the fact that Mooney has the talent to play at a P5 school, is there something that leads people to believe he is leaving or did I miss something? I could see him transferring if Smith got a job at a P5 school, but outside of that I don't see it happening. He seems to really enjoy everything about USD and the program based on all his interviews, unless he is feeding us all a bunch of BS, which I highly doubt. Other than the possibility of Smith leaving, why would he transfer? To me, he seems like a loyal, highly driven kid who doesn't let unfinished business go unfinished, and wants to be the guy who leads this program to its first NCAA tourney. I think the biggest question mark is consistency with this team. Defensively, you know everyone is going to GATA (outside the last 2 games). Outside of Mooney, you don't know what you're going to get offensively from these guys, which is one of Smith's biggest flaws. This offense gets too stagnant at times, and when it does we all pray Mooney catches fire to carry us through. Can we get consistent scoring from Simpson, TBM, Armstrong and even Hagedorn to an extent? We also need Prevost to step up next year as we only have 1 true big man coming back in Hags. Hopefully we can get a big JUCO or grad transfer for more depth now that Sparks and Fuller are gone.

Fort Wayne really let me down at the end of this one. Down by something like 23 points with 16 minutes left they got all the way back to within 1, but turned it over both times they had a chance to take the lead. IPFW is the team that would have given sdsu more trouble. NDSU played out of their minds in the first half tonight but seem incapable of playing a complete game. I'll be surprised if their game is even close tomorrow. NDSU's inconsistency is what I find the scariest part of their team. They are very Jekyll and Hyde with the guard play with the exception of Miller, of course. Their interior game is weak, but if they ever get complete games from their wings I think they are right there with SDSU. Hunter showed the Yotes what he is capable of when he lit us up for 35 points, and looking at the box scores, he either scores 15-20 points or lays goose eggs. Ward can also light it up but seems like he has been pretty streaky too. And then you have AJ Jacobson, honorable mention All-Summit his first two years, but for whatever reason hasn't broken out like Miller has in his junior and senior campaigns. I think Jacobson would still be an all league guy on any other team, but he doesn't seem to get many shots in this system for whatever reason. They don't need a lot of offensive production from their big guys, just good defense to limit Daum from doing Daum things. If these guys can get cookin' or just get some consistency from each of them for a whole game they could very easily beat SDSU...Denver, and USD. NSDU has had a disappointing conference season and they know they can redeem that by winning the tournament and playing spoilers. I think they are relishing the underdog role, and will upset the Jacks tonight. It will be interesting to see how big of a factor the crowd will play tonight also, as the weather may plug some rabbit holes.

Hurst Update: On the Coyote Report, Smith addressed a question about Carlton’s status, and said “we’ll see, there’s a chance he could play… there’s a chance obviously he couldn’t play, so we’ll see how it goes… we hoped to have him back three weeks ago… we’ll see what happens this week.”
Obviously, Smith is not going to give details for opponents to prepare for, but if he is ready to go, I’m interested in how he will be utilized. This is not a time of the year to start experimenting with lineups, and I am mostly worried about chemistry after missing nearly half the season now. If ready to go, I don’t think he’ll start and will only be used as added depth at this point or to stop a shooter who is getting hot. However, it may be an easier transition for him due his limited role offensively.

The Bison have closed out Omaha 84-62 and that is why they are still a reason when they have their heads together are still a pretty good team. Depending on the tie breaker they will either be the 5 or 6 seed. It looks like we have a match up against Omaha in the first round. Maybe I am jinxing the Coyotes but that is exactly who I wanted the Yotes to play. My guess is that the Coyotes will end up with Denver as the #3 seed but that is still to be determined. I would not mind Fort Wayne and NDSU in the 4/5 match up if that is possible but maybe ORU will finish in the 5 spot and now that I think of it I do believe ORU will be the 5 seed. I believe ORU will be the 6 seed and NDSU 5th. They split against one another, and NDSU holds the tie breaker by splitting with the Yotes.

I love a little home cookin' but does our PA have to yell "NO GOOD" after every missed opponent FT? He's making me go deaf

Anybody else buy the feed online? No announcers or scoreboard on the screen. It’s about as bad of a feed from our D2 days when they would have cameras in the rafters 500 feet away from the game with no audio.

As a side note I was pretty impressed with Jech today. He looked as good as he has for awhile but honestly he really hasn't had much of a chance. Just when I am about to label him a bust he shows a pulse and he did today. I wouldn't mind about 8 minutes a game from him. For whatever reason Jech always seems to find his way into Smith’s dog house and never gets steady playing time. Hopefully, today he earned some trust back. His situation reminds me of Flack’s junior year when he was barely getting playing time after he was fully recovered from his injuries. Flack didn’t play any non conference games, and then played solid ball the second half of Summit league play once he got a chance to prove he was a man amongst boys. We are going to need a lot more than 8 minutes per game from him if our Masked Man keeps shooting 20%.
